Adulting Day at KVMS

Press Release: Adulting Day

DeMotte Chamber of Commerce and Kankakee Valley Middle School are coordinating the 2022 Adulting Day to be held on Wednesday, May 18 at the Kankakee Valley Middle School.

The preparatory classes the students will attend are called Adulting 101. The goals of this learning experience will be helping 8th grade students learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning. It also clarifies the need for young teens to examine their attitude toward their futures and their career expectations.

Between the ages of 14 and 20, young women and men make critical decisions that affect the course of their whole lives, decisions about educational paths, career options, lifelong mates, and family timing. They ought to make these critical decisions with knowledge about the realities and options of their futures. At the Adulting Day experience, young people will learn about their career options, evaluate their choices, and plan appropriately for their future.

During the prep courses throughout regular class-time, they will select an adult occupation, based on their current grade point average. They will then be given a checking account containing the amount equivalent to the average monthly salary in that occupation. The students will then spend their salary at Adulting Day on the necessities and luxuries they envision as part of their adult lifestyle. This exercise will help students learn whether their selected occupation will provide the financial resources needed to provide the type of lifestyle they have chosen.

If you are interested in helping our teens to start planning realistically for the future, please volunteer to be a part of Adulting Day. We are looking for volunteers to advise stations at the event for two shifts; 1st shift from 7:15am-10:30am, and 2nd shift from 10:00am-1:30pm and if you choose to help all day, that is helpful too! A mandatory limited criminal background check is required for all volunteers.

Jasper County REMC will be sponsoring snacks and lunch to the volunteers for the day.

Please contact Diva Rish, DeMotte Chamber Executive Director,
at 987-5800 or e-mail info@demottechamber.org to volunteer.
